The repertoire of each orchestra is carefully selected by each conductor, with consideration given to its educational value, artistic quality, instrumentation, and programmatic ability.
- While each member may not be individually challenged by every work, it is important to consider how the ensemble sounds as a whole. Ask yourself this, when not feeling especially challenged, “Am I playing every piece to the best of my ability?”
- Even professional musicians play pieces which are not challenging, but playing these pieces well makes the musician a professional.
- Please encourage your young musicians to talk with their conductor if they have questions about the repertoire, if they are not feeling challenged, if they are feeling too challenged, or if you would simply like to know more about the pieces you are playing.
