Diane Endres Ballweg Winterfest Concert Series

WYSO will present its second concert series of the season, the Diane Endres Ballweg Winterfest Concert Series, on Saturday, March 19, 2016. Almost 400 young musicians will display their great talents to the community during the four concerts. This concert series will also welcome back alumna bassoonist, Nancy Goeres.

At 11:30 am, WYSO’s string orchestra, Sinfonietta, will kick-off the concerts with Symphony No. 8 by Johann Stamitz, Korean Folk Song Variants arranged by Elliot Del Borgo, the King’s Govatte composed by Gossec, Movement IV, Presto, from Symphony No. 73 “La Chasse” by Haydn and arranged by Sandra Dackow, and Don’t Get Around Much Anymore by Duke Ellington. The concert will also feature a performance of Sonata for Sinfonietta by Olivia Zeuske which was commissioned by WYSO for Sinfonietta to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. This concert will also feature a performance by the Madison Music Makers Honors Ensemble.

At the 1:30 concert, WYSO’s Harp Ensemble under the direction of Karen Atz will start the performance. Following them, Concert Orchestra, under the baton of Christine Mata-Eckel will perform Romany Dances by Del Borgo, Festique by Daniels, and Fantasia on the Alleluia Shenandoah by Jacob and arranged by Walter. They will also perform Reynard Burns’ Biciclette which was commissioned by WYSO for Concert Orchestra in honor of our 50th Anniversary.

At 4:00 pm, Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Michelle Kaebisch, will take the stage. They will perform three pieces: Finlandia by Sibelius, Mala Suite by Lutoslawski, and Espana composed by Chabrier.

GoeresThe highlight of the evening will be at the 7:00 pm concert when Youth Orchestra, under the baton of James Smith, will welcome back alumna and bassoonist Nancy Goeres to perform bassoon concerto written by Villa-Lobos, Ciranda das sete notas. Nancy is a charter member of WYSO and was a member from 1966 – 1970. Nancy is currently principal bassoonist at the Pittsburgh symphony.  For her full bio, please click here. Youth Orchestra will also be performing Barber’s Medea’s meditation & Dance of Vengeance along with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2.

The Diane Endres Ballweg Winterfest Concert Series will be held in Mills Concert Hall in the UW Humanities Building, 455 N. Park Street, Madison. WYSO concerts are generally about an hour and a half in length, providing a great orchestral concert opportunity for families. Tickets are available at the door, $10 for adults and $5 for youth18 and under.
