Hello WYSO Members and Families!

Your weekly announcements are below:

All orchestras rehearse at their regular rehearsal times this week.

Parent Volunteers: We are seeking volunteers to be attendance takers and hall monitors. We are especially in need of attendance takers for Concert Orchestra. Please visit our online sign up to see volunteer opportunities.

Endangered Instrument Workshops: The 2019 Endangered Instruments Workshop series begins this Saturday, January 12.These FREE workshops are open to students who play viola, horn, low brass, bass, and bassoon. Musicians that are not enrolled in WYSO are also encouraged to attend!  Find more information and register online by clicking here.

Youth Honors Recital: WYSO will present a recital featuring Honorable Mention recipients from WYSO’s 2019 Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition this Friday, January 11. This FREE recital will take place at 7:00 pm at the Oakwood Village West Auditorium (6205 Mineral Point Rd, Madison, WI 53705).

Philharmonia Concerto Competition: The Philharmonia concerto competition is Saturday, February 2. Competition winners will perform their concerti with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Bolz Family Spring Concerts on May 18, 2019. Interested Philharmonia members should submit the concerto competition application with a $30 application fee by January 27, 2019. Applications are available online or at the WYSO office. Questions? An Evening with The Kissers, Brink Lounge, January 25, 2019: Tickets are now available for the sixth annual Evening with The Kissers fundraiser. The entire family will enjoy this fundraiser featuring Madison’s premier Irish band, The Kissers. The evening includes delicious food, a raffle, a silent auction, trivia, door prizes, and more. Tickets are $20 per person in advance or $25 at the door. Kids 18 and under are $10 with an adult ticket purchase. Proceeds benefit the Musical Notes fundraiser.   • We are seeking silent auction items for this event. Please contact Leah Schultz or Beth Larson if you have an item to donate to the silent auction. Hand-made items are always popular!

Musical Notes: We are about halfway through our family fundraiser. Every WYSO member should set up an online fundraising account. Easily create and share your online fundraising profile by clicking here.

  • Every dollar raised through raffle ticket sales goes towards your Musical Notes goal. Find more information about the WYSO Paris/London raffle here. Raffle tickets can be picked up from the WYSO office.
  • Congrats to our current fundraising leader, Youth Orchestra percussionist Luke Whittingham who has raised $643 towards our Musical Notes fundraising goal of $75,000!
  • Congrats to our current orchestra leader Youth Orchestra. Your orchestra has raised a total of $2,920!

James Ehnes Master Class: Violinist James Ehnes will host a violin master class featuring performers from Youth Orchestra and/or Philharmonia Orchestra. The master class will take place Saturday, February 16 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. Students interested in performing should submit a master class application, available in the main WYSO office and are due this Saturday, January 12. The master class is free and all WYSO violinists are encouraged to attend. James Ehnes joins the Madison Symphony Orchestra February 15 through February 17. Learn more about his visit here.

Orchestra group photos are now available for purchase. View and purchase a keepsake print of your large ensemble photo by visiting the online photo gallery.

Chamber Ensembles, Percussion Ensemble, and Brass Choirs. Specific room assignments can be found weekly on the announcements bulletin board. These ensembles meet this week at the following times:

  • Percussion Ensemble: 7:00 am arrival. 7:30-9:30 am rehearsal.
  • Chamber Program:
    • Chamber participants in Youth and Philharmonia meet from 8:00-8:50 am
    • Chamber participants in Concert Orchestra or Sinfonietta meet from 9:00-9:50 am
  • WYSO Chamber Orchestra: 1:30 pm-3:00 pm in Mills Hall.
  • Brass Choirs:
  • Youth Orchestra Brass Choir: 8:00-8:45 am
  • Philharmonia Brass Choir: 8:45-9:25 am
  • Concert Brass Choir: 9:25-9:55 am
