Our Programs

Each year WYSO offers a full array of the finest orchestral training and performance opportunities to young musicians between the ages of 5 and 18. Three full orchestras, two string orchestras, a chamber music program, and a variety of ensembles from Harp to Percussion to Honors Brass form the core of the WYSO orchestral program.

WYSO is perfect for the student who has been introduced to an instrument —and loves playing. This extension of school music and private lessons introduces young musicians to a community of players as passionate about music as they are. Our students learn and grow alongside other young musicians who travel to the Madison area from 19 counties in southern Wisconsin each Saturday for 33 weeks throughout the school year. Performances are integral to the program, from chamber music recitals to full orchestral programs, from the percussion extravaganza to community and international tours.

AT WYSO, students can hone their techniques in masterclasses with some of the best orchestral musicians in the nation, participate in WYSO Concerto competitions, join the Honors Brass Quintet, and mentor in the WYSO Music Makers community impact program. WYSO challenges students to achieve beyond their expectations.

With WYSO in-residence at the McFarland Performing Arts Center for the 20-21 season, students will rehearse at two adjacent school facilities with state-of-the art band, orchestra, and choral spaces, a black-box theater for chamber music and ensemble playing, and the new 800-seat, state of the art performance hall.

The WYSO Orchestras program requires a successful audition and structures tuition at 30% of its true cost.  Scholarships are available to help defray the expense of tuition, private lessons, chamber music, and international tours.

The WYSO Music Makers Program supports students who would like to learn instrumental music in a non-competitive environment, regardless of ability to pay. The program provides instruments, music, and multi-lingual instruction to a diverse group of underserved students in a comfortable community center atmosphere. Student recitals are held each season and the WYSO Music Makers often perform at community events and celebrations.
