WYSO partners with MAYCO

We are pleased to announce a new partnership with the Madison Area Youth Chamber Orchestra. MAYCO, led by its music director and founder Mikko Utevsky, is an ensemble that offers a fresh and unique opportunity for orchestra students in the Madison area. Below is a letter from Mikko inviting you to participate in this upcoming Summer season with MAYCO.

Dear WYSO Parents and Students,

Some of your students may have brought home information about a Summer ensemble, the Madison Area Youth Chamber Orchestra. In an effort to give students a well-rounded Summer music experience, we are now partnering with WYSO. As its founder and music director, and a former member of WYSO, I would like to introduce myself and the ensemble to you, and to encourage you and your student(s) to become involved.

My name is Mikko Utevsky; I’m a violist and conductor, and I study at the UW-Madison. I founded MAYCO while a member of WYSO’s Youth Orchestra to provide an opportunity for high school players to experience important repertoire for smaller orchestra in its intended setting, including symphonies and concerti by various Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary composers.

Over the past three seasons, the orchestra has become more diverse in age and ability, encompassing members from 8th grade to post-graduate players. In this context, musicians are more responsible for their own contribution to the whole of orchestral playing, and are able to learn from more experienced participants.

This season features two concerts, July 11 and August 22, each preceded by a week of intensive rehearsals. Concerts are public, ticketed, and presented on campus at 7:30 PM. The first features local pianist Thomas Kasdorf in a concerto by Haydn; the second showcases recent Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition finalist Caitlin Ruby Miller in Samuel Barber’s gorgeous Knoxville: Summer of 1915.

Please consider joining us for one or both concerts as members of the audience, or better still, as performers! There are still openings for every instrument, and exciting works by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Shostakovich and more to explore. There is no fee to participate.

You are welcome to contact me for more information, either via email, by phone at (608) 514-5537, or find us on Facebook or online. I hope to see you this summer!

Sincerely,

Mikko Utevsky
